Degree recital at Lawrence University featuring the music of Vivian Fung, Nico Muhly, Sarah K. Snider, and more.
Vivian Fung is collaborating with the Jasper String Quartet, tenor Nicholas Phan, and pianist Myra Huang, on the creation of a new song cycle, Lamenting Earth. The project is a half-evening length song cycle, approximately 30 minutes, for tenor, string quartet, and piano. The work centers around poet Claire Wahmanholm’s prize-winning poem “O,” which took second place at the Academy of American Poets’ inaugural Treehouse Climate Action Poem Prize. The poem is described by the judges as “an original and powerful evocation, using a single letter of the alphabet to name the wonders that are at risk of being no more…The voice is prophetic and unrelenting: a lament, an elegy, and a clarion call to action!”

The 63rd season kicks off with Maestro Măcelaru leading the Festival Orchestra in works by Vivian Fung, Helen Grime, Nina Young, and Karim Al-Zand.
Beginning our season, San Jose-based, JUNO Award-winning, Canadian composer Vivian Fung‘s West Coast premiere of Parade captures the essence of community amid solitude, reflecting on the journey from isolation to togetherness experienced during the pandemic. Inspired by the San Francisco Lunar New Year parade, Fung intertwines chaos and melancholy with empathy and gratitude, echoing the spirit of celebration amidst adversity.
New York-based Gamelan Yowana Sari perform an indoor-outdoor, site-responsive performance of traditional Balinese music for the Samara Dana gamelan and contemporary work by Vivian Fung, Michael Gordon, and Evan Ziporyn.
Join us after the performance to try out the instruments and talk with the performers!
Directed by Michael Lipsey, Yowana Sari champions an international array of composers for the gamelan. It has appeared at many festivals, including the River To River Festival, and participates with Midori & Friends and the Cultural After School Adventures (CASA) program to enrich New York public school students’ experience of music.

This is the second fundraiser concert of the 23-24 season in support of the Chamber Nucleus European tour with the program “Canadian Impressions” in June.
This performance features Bach’s beloved Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 for two flutes and violin solo with Frank Ho (violin), Rock Larochelle and Jennifer Gregory (flutes), and the Nucleus strings. Also, a little taste of the works being prepared for this trip include “Birdsong” by Canadian composer Vivian Fung for violin and piano among other pieces.
“The Divine Feminine: A Woman’s Love through Life and Loss” aims to tell the stories of women, historical, folkloric, and universal (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Helen Creighton, Penelope of the Iliad, the mythical Sirens) and their capacities for love – love for their children, their partners, their work, a lost loved one, and/or themselves/each other. Through a programme dedicated exclusively to the works of Canadian women composers, the artists and the audience will consider how love has led to the most passionate moments of the character’s lives, for better or for worse.
Conductor Rebecca Tong leads the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in this celebratory program that honors Women’s History Month. Violinist and Sphinx collaborator Melissa White returns to Hilbert Circle Theatre to perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto. The program also features six female composers from around the world, including Brazil, the United States, China, Canada, Indonesia, and Mexico. Florence Price was a trailblazer who created a successful career at a time when there were few opportunities for female composers. The rest of the composers featured continue to blaze trails in the 21st century with their wide range of styles and perspectives, standing at the forefront of classical compositions today.
